We will cover Ruby basics, Cocoa and Ruby syntax comparison and sample code.

Apple added official support to Ruby scripting, first, in Leopard. You can find Cocoa Ruby project template in Xcode. Everything in Cocoa can, basically, be mapped to Ruby through the RubyCocoa bridge.

You can have a Cocoa application project that mixes Ruby and Objective-C source files. This adds a lot more flexibility in developing our applications.

We are looking forward to see how we can leverage the beauty of Ruby in Cocoa application from Chris that evening.

The first gathering is postponed to after to the iPhone launch. It’s now on 24/7.

Cocoa is the native development framework for Mac OS X and iPhone. It is nearly a must to master Cocoa in order to develop application in these platforms.

To have everyone to get started quickly, we will go through “famous” sample code provided by Apple to introduce you the essentials.

One line of code browser

Sample Core Data application

iPhone sample code (if NDA is lifted by then)

These example are fun and easy to build. Anyone with ability equivalent to basic Javascript programming can build and run those samples. By going through these samples, we hope to introduce the basic Objective-C syntax, the development environment and some common APIs.

If you are bringing a laptop (in this web site, all computing facilities are Macs unless explicitly specified) with you, please install Xcode in order to run the samples.

Venue: Cafe Corridor (openrice link) 26A Russell Street, Causeway Bay – right next to the Levi’s store opposite to Times Square
View Map

Time: 8:00 pm – 9:00 pm (we will start at 8:00 pm instead of 7:30 originally cause it takes time for folks in Science Park to get to Causeway Bay)

Charge: buy your own drink (coffee there is amazingly good!!)

How to join: Please sign up in Facebook Event or in this post’s comment
